Oscar Award Trophy

THE Oscar

Well another year of Oscars are history, and as usual, I had not seen enough of the Acadamy Award nominees to judge, and those that I DID want to win did not.  I still think Meryl Streep was incredible in Julie and Julia, but then, maybe the Academy is just weary of honoring her year after year. Maybe they should just create a Meryl Streep award and give her that each year for her superior work, and then get on to giving out the also-ran awards to all the other folks in Hollywood.

Perhaps I’ll try harder to see the new movies next year, and we’ll give the Traveler’s Library Best Movie Destination award. What do you think?

Meanwhile, here are two very thought-provoking lists of movies that make you want to go there from one of my favorite sites, Go BackPacking.  I know these lists have exteneded MY Netflix list a bunch. Enjoy!

Oh, and before you go, please note that my favorite movie site, Film Gecko has moved to this location. Jane Boursaw stays right on top of things, and by golly she even  picked Hurt Locker (filmed in Jordan)as best picture when everyone else was betting on Avatar (filmed in the imagination of creator James Cameron)!!.

Now, heeeeeeeere’s Go Back Packing:

I went to sleep before Hurt Locker won Best Director & Movie. What disappointed me was the documentary win. I really felt Food, Inc. was an amazing movie that needed a boost. Instead, the Academy opted for The Cove, which I watched Saturday night, and might be future fodder for this blog, Vera, if you ever plan a trip to Japan. The Cove limits itself to one outrage, the killing of dolphins, whose meat is fed to Japanese children, increasing their body burden of mercury. Food, Inc. describes how all our food here in the USA is being altered, how the subsidized crops corn and soybeans turn up in many packaged foods, how Monsanto is forcing out the small farmer and imposing genetically modified seeds. I felt sick after watching both documentaries, but think the message of Food, Inc. is more urgent.

Sorry – whilst I love movies of faraway places, it always feels antithetical to me to watch a movie instead of going. Just saying…thanks for the post. -r

I did not watch the awards as I was busy. Sad to hear Meryl Streep did not win- she was excellent in Julie and Julia.

I’m off to Denver- not sure how my internet connection will fare- I’ll try to get in here as much as possible!

    Vera,
how about a post on places you think inspire movies, or maybe movie locations where you’d like to see a *different* movie made than what’s most well known there?

Alexandra, although I have not seen any of the documentaries, I was most fascinated by the one about Burma.
Richard–not at all INSTEAD of traveling. When I saw Ryan’s dtr so many years ago, it made we want to go to Ireland, and I finally did and stayed at a B & B just above the beach filmed in the movie. The movie that makes people travel is what I have in mind.
    Kerry: Great idea.
Anjuli: See you soon. Have a nice trip.

Yes, I love the idea of that award!

I haven’t seen Streep’s movie but I have seen both Avatar and The Hurt Locker and much preferred the latter as a movie. Clearly the effects and cinematography of Avatar is stunning and worth celebrating but the story and acting was not special enough to warrant such premium awards as Best Picture or Best Actor/Actress.
