I always believed that the(English) were the first to land on North America. To find out the Dutch arrived 50yrs before is
amazing. I was told.(when small)that we visited Holland on the way to America and they encouraged the Dutch and Germans go with them.

This sounds like a great book! There are so many myths aren't there? It is amazing how many times we re write history- even while we are still living it- and it is not surprising since there are so many different perspectives.

Definitely want to visit Massachusetts!

Did you say your relatives were on the Mayflower? could we be related?

Sounds a good read. As someone who travelled a lot to Boston with work, I've been a little interested in the Pilgrims and what them survive, given that they didn't do it for "king and country" as was the norm in those days of new settlements.

I could have worded that better, Kerry. It is the first example of a group of people who came specifically to start a new community and stayed. The Spanish communities built up around military outposts and religious establishments meant to convert the Indians--a slightly different situation. In the end, it is the Mayflower compact that really makes the Pilgrims different. They did not claim the land in the name of the King--but swore allegiance to themselves.

sounds like a good read, one I'll look for. but I have to ask -- the first still enduring community? what about Saint Augustine? and Santa Fe? perhaps he's meaning the first still enduring community in New England.
