I've not read any of Brown's books, but your post made me recall a book by Diana Gabaldon in which she details the historical and scientific background of her books. Her books are a series [actually she has two series now, the second one hasn't grabbed me but I liked the first] of novels set mostly in mid 18th century Scotland and America. One of the chief characters in the first series is a healer and it was most interesting to read the background of herbs and medicines and learn more about what people thought about all that in those days, as well as to learn a bit about Galbaldon's decisions on the use of such detail

been a while since I've read it, too, thinking I'll have to go look it up agian.

I am still waiting to get The Lost Symbol from my library. Too expensive for me. Think I'll wait for the paperback. But I did read The God Machine by JG Sandom. Liked it a lot. It also features freemasons. But Sandom is a much better writer than Brown.

I think someone needs to write a debunking book debunking some of the stuff in this debunking book. Cox seems too supportive of some of Brown's fringey pseudoscience.

What a great post! I haven't read Brown's new book yet, but I locked myself in a friend's closet many years ago so that I could rip through The Da Vinci Code without being interrupted. Love it.
